If Only I Could Play

Even when I’m bone tired and oh so weary, even when I don’t want to see . . . I hear the music. I hear the sweet soft song of all the years that have gone by − of all the years that will be. I hear my father call me. My spirit comes to me on the lightest note. The music is a sound inside me. It reminds me that I can dance.

The music shows me how to love and how to care, how to live and how to believe. The music makes the sounds of people purer, sweeter. It smoothes out the roughest edges and softens the hardest words.

The sounds inside me know that everyone has music. It’s been part of every culture. It’s born in every heart. If I could only play the right key, hit the harmony, . . . if I could only find a way to remind them . . . give them the beauty, hold them with a sigh beside me. We could imagine a moonlight of music play across the stars.

No one would be lonesome or lonely. No one would need to scream or cry.

If only I could play the music. They could dance with me.

How stunningly beautiful! To see the world in musical tones is lovely. I heard once that when we pray the sound that is heard in heaven is music. How appropriate.

When I was a kid there were a chorus of singing voices in the playground - skipping songs, pop songs, London Bridge and nursery rhyme songs. In town, I heard hummers humming behind counters or in the shoe aisle, whistlers whistling as they pumped gas or read dip sticks. Shoppers passing me singing melodies that made me want to sing along. But I never hear that anymore. I wish I did. ;D

Hi Mama,
you always have such a positive somment. I wonder that you must be a teacher of some sort. You write with such thought, it seems to prove me out.

Oh Roberta,
Your look at life as a child is a children's book in the making. I love world view as you hold it. It must have be a wonderful place I could see it, feel it as you desecribed it.

Liz-
There's a song by Shawn Colvin called "I don't know why". If you have ITunes, I'm sure you could download it. I have many thoughts on the song's interpretation and will leave that for an email sometime. I mention it because there's a line in it that sums up this post for me: "If there were no music, then I would not get through..."
I've no idea what I would do.
Check out the song. Colvin is wonderful.

Hi Michael,
I like Shawn Colvin. I agree Colvin is wonderful. I listen to music when I write. You should read
Philosophy and Joe Walsh

I did read that Liz and thought it was a wonderful post. I tend to get carried away when writing about music so I let it be. I've been posting a "journal soundtrack link" for a few pertinent posts depending on what I was listening to when I wrote a piece.
I take a Nano on the train to Boston.
I discovered (yeah, right, this guy has been around for years) a wonderful Swedish Jazz pianist named Bobo Stenson. Wonderful stuff to write to.

Strauss, I'm not a teacher ... never even went to college. But I have also been told I'm an 'old soul' ... and have been around many times! Whatever the truth is, I just seem to be able to see lessons in most everything. Probably because I've been forced to ... it was either that or go insane from all I've been through!

Thanks for the compliment.

Oh, Mouse,
You don't have to go to college to be a teacher and yep, you're definitely an old soul if there ever was one. :)

You see with the eyes of a seeker of truth.
