Things that Hurt

Benjamin Franklin said, "Things that hurt instruct."
Do I think I have to hurt to learn?

  1. It's not a statement to be taken both ways. Things that hurt teaches you something, whether it is hurting you or someone else. The ability to feel hurt whether for oneself or see it in others, is a way by which one is able to learn whether one should avoid a certain situation or not. So, it is not necessary for one to be hurt to learn, if you are observant enough.

  2. Hi Liz
I agree that one should be able to learn without being hurt. But sometimes we can try so hard not to be hurt that we don't learn either.

  3. If something doesn't hurt, it probably won't really get your attention...so you won't learn from it.

  4. Welcome, Andrew.
    Nice to meet you.
I gues you have a point. On the other hand, if you're really curious, you find learning before it finds you. ;)

  5. Old Ben was right. But sometimes, people are hurt, and don't learn...and sometimes, people don't get hurt, and learn.

It takes wizdom to keep from having to get hurt.

Things that hurt, do instruct, but it takes wizdom to listen.

  7. Things that hurt OTHER people is something we can learn from as well.

Although the lesson can be more internalized if it happens to you.

  8. Hello taorit,
What a sweet thing--that term of endearment. Thank you and remember I am there to help.

Yes, no one has mentioned that things that hurt others can teach us too. To take that further, if we do the hurting, hopefull we internalize that.

  9. Sometimes it is true, like when you touch a hot pan and burn yourself or not to pet the strange doggy in the park that might want to use your arm as a rawhide bone.

but its true not everyone learns, take for example my friend that has to get stitches and tetnus shots every 10 years from a random dog that she plays too rough with.

  10. Oh Janus,
That sounds like an awful lesson to have to have learned. I'm glad you learned it by watching.
